Eyelid Surgery

Also called eye lift or blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can have the corrective benefit of improving your vision if you suffer from ptosis, a medical condition that causes the upper eye lid to droop. In severe cases of eyelid drooping, your vision may be impaired. Treatment can leave you looking and feeling more youthful while also helping to clear your field of vision.

Your Procedure

Eyelid surgery is a delicate procedure that should be entrusted to those who specialize in cosmetic eye surgery. Our eye surgery specialists aim to deliver a superior experience from the moment you decide that the rejuvenating treatment is right for you.

The outpatient procedure is performed with minimal pain and discomfort in less than an hour. A local anesthetic is first used to numb the treatment area. Incisions are then made along the natural creases of the eyelid, or in some cases along the inside of the eyelid to help conceal any potential scarring that may accompany surgery. Depending on your specific treatment, fat deposits may then be removed or repositioned, muscles may be tightened, or loose skin removed. Your incisions are then closed using removable sutures or skin adhesives.

You will need to have someone with you after surgery to drive you home.

Complications

Before deciding whether eyelid surgery is right for you, our team will walk you through all aspects of the procedure, including a discussion of possible complications. Eyelid surgery is a very safe procedure, and our patients are typically thrilled with their results. But like any medical procedure, there are some risks.

Eyelid surgery complications can include:

  • Temporary inability to close your eyes
  • Infection and bleeding
  • Blurred vision
  • Scarring
  • Skin discoloration

Recovery

During your eyelid surgery consultation, we will discuss at length everything you need to know to speed up your recovery and ensure optimal results.

In the days immediately following surgery, your eyes will be swollen and a bit sensitive. We’ll provide you with specific instructions about cleaning your eyes and icing to help minimize swelling and bruising. Pain or discomfort after surgery should be minimal and can be managed with medication.

We’ll have you back to remove your sutures a couple days to a week later and will continue monitoring your progress throughout the recovery period. You can expect to see aesthetic improvement after your swelling has gone down (within a week or so), with results improving as you heal.

Treating Ptosis

Ptosis is characterized by drooping of one or both eyelids. It can affect people of all ages but is usually associated with aging. Treatment typically includes removal of skin and/or fat and tightening of the muscles.
